Interventions

Over the years several women who needed our support have approached the Women's Support Group. Here, we reproduce summarised versions of these interventions. Their names have been changed to protect their privacy. Transgendered individuals have been referred to in the gender by which they refer to themselves.

Sanda & Priya

In November 1999, The WSG was approached by two women who were in desperate need of protection, financial aid and peer support. Sanda and Priya, 21 and 22 years of age respectively at the time, had formed a relationship which had put them in jeopardy with friends and family.

Vijith

The WSG was first alerted about Vijith through newspaper reports in 2000 that sensationally reported his story:

In January 2000, a 17-year-old girl, Vini, was admitted to a rural state hospital by her family, after an attempt at ending her life. She died that same night. The inquest revealed the reason...

Dasa

In early 2001, Dasa had been remanded on grounds of ‘impersonation' and ‘deceiving society'. There are many recorded versions (especially in newspaper and police reports) of Dasa's story and this is one.

Parami and Malani

In early 2002 Parami (28), and Malani (17) from Colombo , visited the WSG drop-in center for advice and assistance as they were in a desperate situation.

Damayantha

In March 2003, the WSG was contacted by an organisation working on the prevention of suicide to meet a transgendered person. They had been told that she was born a woman and later developed male genitalia. We present her story here as concisely as possible. Damayantha has narrated different versions of her life and the WSG and mental health professionals have had difficulty figuring out the ‘truth'.

Dulani

Dulani, a young girl in her mid-twenties, lived in the suburbs of Colombo . Her relationship with her family was not very stable, and after leaving school, she found a job at a garment factory and was boarded nearby. While working in this garment factory, she started a relationship with a young girl, Nelum, who worked in the same factory.

Vasanthi and Ashani

Vasanthi has been a familiar person to the WSG members for many years. In mid 2004, Vasanthi asked the WSG for help in dealing with problems arising due to her relationship with Ashani.
